Dear friends in music;

It's Nov. 9th as I write this, the day after the 2016 US election, and the sky inside the Beltway of Washington DC is filled with dark clouds. Outside our office window, wind-blown clusters of dead leaves swirl over rooftops like flocks of ominous birds. Hours before, when I woke far too early this morning, it was raining -- the heavens grey, rain drops falling quietly, like tears. The rain - which now resumes - had not been predicted, much like the election. But we should have known. Such weather events emerge from dark currents growing in the global atmosphere.

On dark days like this, in times like these, music and art and writing serve as sunshine and solace.

While 2016 was notable as the nadir of American politics, marked by a level of discourse that dredged the gutter, 2016 was an especially bright year for high-quality music in the genres of both jazz and rock at Cuneiform. To commemorate and celebrate it, Cuneiform Records presents a sampler album, Cuneiform Records: The Albums of 2016.

We invite you to listen to Cuneiform Records: The Albums of 2016 and explore the wide spectrum of music we recently released over the year. Each track by each artist is unique; we invite you to sample all. And then, if you've not already done so, we hope that you'll listen to full albums by the artists who most appeal to you.

We released a total of 15 albums in 2016, by some of the most highly esteemed musicians on the planet, established icons of avant and contemporary musics like Wadada Leo Smith, Sao Paulo Underground (led by Rob Mazurek), The Claudia Quintet (led by John Hollenbeck), Richard Pinhas w/ Masami Akita (Merzbow) & Yoshida Tatsuya, Thumbscrew (Mary Halvorson/Michael Formanek/Tomas Fujiwara), Rez Abbasi (w/ Junction), Gary Lucas (w/ Fleischerei) – as well as fast-rising-stars like Bent Knee, Empirical, Naima, I.P.A. and Ergo. These artists came from around the world: the USA, the UK (England), Europe (France, Italy, Spain), Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden), Japan, and South America (Brazil). And as usual, Cuneiform’s releases were in a wide range of cutting-edge, progressive styles that emerged from the genres of both jazz (avant-jazz, post-jazz, jazz/rock and fusion, improv, creative music) and rock (post-rock, indie-rock, ambient, soundscapes, avant-progressive, experimental rock/noise). The majority of 2016's releases were jazz-related, and this year, two of our artists appeared prominently on the covers of leading American jazz publicans: DownBeat honored Wadada Leo Smith as a "National Treasure" on its November 2016 cover, and Jazziz celebrated Rez Abbasi on its July 2016 cover.  2016 was also notable for the high calibre of our rock albums; we released music by several top-notch bands who astounded the international rock music press, won new fans worldwide, and packed concerts. Our 2016 rock albums included Bent Knee (Say So), Deus Ex Machina (Devoto) and Richard Pinhas (Process & Reality w/ Masami Akita/Merzbow and Yoshida Tatsuya and Mu w/ Barry Cleveland).

We ask all of you who are Music Press & Radio Professionals to PLEASE CONSIDER CUNEIFORM’S 2016 RELEASES when compiling your BEST MUSIC OF 2016 lists.  Cuneiform Records: The Albums of 2016 may help you recall albums that recently impressed you. You can also stream entire albums from our Cuneiform Records’ Bandcamp page. Our recordings are available for sale, in various formats, via Amazon, iTunes, Bandcamp, Wayside Music or your favorite record store. Please scroll below for more information on each of our 15 releases from 2016.

Heartfelt thanks to ALL of you for supporting Cuneiform and our musicians throughout 2016. In uncertain times, under stormy weather, 'a little help from our friends' goes a long way.

In closing, I want to bring your attention to an incredibly positive 2016 political landmark: August 25th 2016 was the 100th Anniversary of the National Park Service, the U.S. Department of the Interior bureau established in 1916 to oversee America's National Parks. The concept of national parks - "America's Best Idea" - was an American innovation dating from the 1870s that eventually spread worldwide. In October, Cuneiform released Wadada Leo Smith's America's National Parks, a two-CD set honoring our nation's precious common property, America's shared public grounds. It is our duty and honor as Americans to preserve our public spaces in perpetuity: these lands are our national heritage, and whatever and whenever political, religious and/or social differences divide us -- like now-- remember that we literally, figuratively, and spiritually come together as One People on these truly Common Grounds.

Best regards

Cuneiform's Year in Review 2016

Jazz & Beyond: New Recordings

The Claudia Quintet
Super Petite
Genre: Jazz / Post-Jazz
Format: CD / Digital
Release Date: 6/24/2016

Short doesn’t necessarily mean simple. Drummer-composer John Hollenbeck acrobatically explores the dichotomy between brevity and complexity on Super Petite, the eighth release by the critically-acclaimed, proudly eccentric Claudia Quintet. The oxymoronic title of the new album, captures the essence of its ten new compositions, which pack all of the wit and virtuosity that listeners have come to expect from the Claudia Quintet into a shorter time-frame. Hollenbeck’s uncategorizable music – which bridges the worlds of modern jazz and new music in surprising and inventive ways - is realized by Claudia’s longstanding line-up which has forged an astounding chemistry and become expert at juggling mind-boggling dexterity with inviting emotion and spirit.

Wadada Leo Smith
America's National Parks
Format: 2xCD / Digital
Release Date: 10/14/2016

With America’s National Parks, visionary composer and trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith offers his latest epic collection, a six-movement suite inspired by the scenic splendor, historic legacy, and political controversies of the country’s public landscapes.  The spark for the project came from two places: Smith’s own research into the National Park system, beginning with Yellowstone, the world’s first national park; and Ken Burns’ documentary series The National Parks: America’s Best Idea. This suite explores, confronts and questions the preserved natural resources that are considered the most hallowed ground in the U.S. – and some that should be. America’s National Parks was penned for his newly expanded Golden Quintet. Pianist Anthony Davis, bassist John Lindberg and drummer Pheeroan akLaff are joined by cellist Ashley Walters, affording the composer new melodic and coloristic possibilities.

Empirical
Connection
Genre: Jazz
Format: CD / Digital
Release Date: 2/5/2016

Empirical has become one of Europe’s top jazz ensembles by creating a bracing sound rife with roiling emotion. The quartet builds on the extroverted improvisational ethos of the 1960s New Thing, embracing oblique harmonies, translucent textures and jagged, quick shifting rhythms. Featuring Nathaniel Facey (alto sax), Shaney Forbes (drums), Lewis Wright (vibraphone) and Tom Farmer (bass), Connection is the fifth Empirical album, the first to feature only the quartet with no guests, and the first released outside of their home base of England. It captures the ensemble at its most pure and potent. Recorded after a week-long run at Foyles Bookshop London, the album captures the raw energy, brash ideas, and volatile group sound that Empirical has built upon the vast territory opened by jazz’s mid-1960s explorers.

Sao Paulo Underground
Cantos Invisíveis
Genre: Jazz / Tropicalia / Electronic
World / Psychedelic / Post-Jazz
Format: CD / Digital
Release Date: 10/14/2016

São Paulo Underground sounds more confident and intrepid than ever, with a program of music evoking lost haunts, enduring love, and the sheer delirious joy of making music together. Their breathtaking fifth album, Cantos Invisíveis, is a celebration of camaraderie and the spaces that allow love and friendship to unfurl. Alchemical aural conspirators for some 10 years, the group has developed its own approach to structure, with slippery forms, unabashedly beautiful melodies and lapidary textures. The music inhabits multiple planes simultaneously as "a projection of sound that celebrates as well as mourns past, present and future times," Rob Mazurek says. "The vocal quality of this particular music shouts and hollers for love and compassion, the joy and sorrows of life. It’s a street parade for everybody."

Rez Abbasi & Junction
Behind the Vibration

Genre: Jazz / Jazz-Rock
Electric Jazz / Fusion
Format: CD / Digital
Release Date: 5/20/2016

Junction, the electric project that guitarist Rez Abbasi formed to bring his original tunes to life, features Mark Shim on tenor saxophone and the electronic MIDI Wind Controller, Ben Stivers on keyboards, B-3 organ and Rhodes, and drummer Kenny Grohowski. The band is a supremely maleable ensemble that has forged a poised and texturally accute group approach. While exploring a vivid palette of electronic sounds and aggressive grooves, Junction maintains the dynamics, precise calibration, and interactive imperative of an inspired jazz ‘acoustic’ combo. With this newest album, Behind the Vibration, realized via his new electric Junction, Abbasi takes another bold step, embracing his rock ‘n’ roll roots with a bear hug that encompasses post-bop, South Asian traditions, and state of the art sonics.

Thumbscrew
Convallaria
Genre: Jazz
Format: CD / Digital
Release Date: 5/20/2016

Creative artists aren’t subject to state persecution in the United States, but indifference can exact its own cost, just as generous support can pay steep dividends. Thumbscrew spent two weeks honing the tunes on Convallaria at City of Asylum, a residency program in Pittsburgh, and for the band the opportunity for intensive, undistracted work and woodshedding yielded a particularly striking body of music. Convallaria is the work of a true collective with all players composing and taking equal responsibility for shaping the music’s flow. While exploring an array of improvisational spaces, the band has honed a sinewy sound marked by transparent textures and astringent rhythms. It’s music that pushes outward and snaps back into unexpectedly altered forms.

I.P.A.
I Just Did Say Something
Genre: Jazz
Format: CD / Digital
Release Date: 6/24/2016

For a number of reasons, Scandinavia is currently one of the epicenters of vivid, forward-looking jazz, often marked by a tantalizing balance of form and freedom. Over the past decade, the quintet I.P.A. has come to embody the best of this volatile sensibility, which makes sense as the band draws its players from definitive Nordic ensembles. I Just Did Say Something is the quintet’s most exhilarating statement yet; it’s the work of a band fully alive to its own power, while eagerly investigating new directions. I.P.A. is strongly influenced by the seminal 1960s work of Don Cherry and Ornette Coleman. Harmonically unfettered, rhythmically unpredictable, and melodically unvarnished, the quintet thrives on live-wire interaction, with rapidly intersecting lines that swoop and collide, disentangle, divide and swing!

Ergo
As subtle as tomorrow
Genre: Jazz / Electronic / Minimalism
Format: CD / Digital
Release Date: 2/5/2016

Trombonist, composer, and sonic architect Brett Sroka has honed an inviting improvisation-laced sound in his trio Ergo, an electro-acoustic group approach that often reveals strangely beautiful and unexpected realms. What’s not surprising about Ergo is discovering Sroka’s affinity for Emily Dickinson, the poet whose radical concision and visionary deployment of silence is unmatched in the English language. Featuring drummer Shawn Baltazor and Sam Harris on piano/Rhodes, As subtle as tomorrow captures the latest evolution of Sroka’s singular vision and is based on a brief and typically cryptic Dickinson verse. A suite in which overlapping melodies, motifs and improvisations organically evolve into and out of the music’s electronic elements--evocative and mysterious, playful and spiritually charged.

Naima
Bye
Genre: Jazz
Format: LP / CD / Digital
Release Date: 1/22/2016

With Bye, The Spanish trio Naima is well on its way to securing a spot as one of the leading combos on the contemporary European scene. Featuring Enrique Ruiz on piano and synths, Luis Torregrosa on drums, and Rafael Ramos Sania on double bass, the Valencia-based electro-acoustic band has honed a dramatic, darkly romantic sound marked by astringent textures, arresting melodies, and tightly coiled rhythms. Avoiding the jazz trio trope of a theme followed by a string of solos, they’ve concentrated on a group approach concerned with the ebb and flow of energy and finely calibrated inner dynamics, as well as melody and song that often erase distinctions between soloist and accompanist. Bye also features two revelatory covers, “Animal Chin,” by Jaga Jazzist and Elliott Smith's “Can't Make A Sound.”

The Ed Palermo Big Band
One Child Left Behind
Genre: Jazz / Big Band
Format: CD / Digital
Release Date: 1/22/2016

Over the past two decades Ed Palermo has earned an avid international following with his brilliantly executed, reverently irreverent arrangements of Frank Zappa’s tempestuous and wildly inventive music. On previous albums Palermo infused the world of Zappalogy with his own brand of incisive wit and bracing improvisation. He doesn’t neglect Zappa on One Child Left Behind but he turns his big band loose like it’s playing one of its regular gigs. Exploring an expansive array of moods and material, the band delivers an audaciously entertaining program that’s full of surprises: including a fatalistic film theme, a gorgeous Neil Young ballad, an existential Leiber and Stoller hit and an intoxicating Los Lobos classic. Palermo also throws in some beautifully crafted originals, and of course offers a generous helping of Zappa too.

Gary Lucas' Fleischerei
[featuring Sarah Stiles]
Music from Max Fleischer Cartoons

Genre: Jazz / Musical
Format: CD / Digital
Release Date: 2/5/2016

Next to Walt Disney, Max Fleischer is the best-known animator of the 20th century, creating the one and only Betty Boop, and bringing Popeye The Sailor to (animated) life.  Guitarist Gary Lucas (Captain Beefheart, Jeff Buckley, Peter Hammill) has long been a fan of Fleischer's work and has wished to develop a band to present the music that was used in these cartoons. The music and era conjured up by the group is a gleaming confection from a hurly-burly era when the Jazz Age crashed into the Great Depression and Tin Pan Alley borrowed shamelessly from Harlem.  Featuring: trombonist/arranger Joe Fiedler, saxist Jeff Lederer, double bassist Michael Bates, drummer Rob Garcia and Tony Award-nominated, Broadway vocalist Sarah Stiles–embodying both Betty Boop and Olive Oyl.

Bent Knee
Say So

Genre: Rock / Indie Rock / Art-Rock / Pop / Avant-Progressive
Format: CD / Digital
Release Date: 5/20/2016

Bent Knee is a band without frontiers. The Boston-based group seamlessly connects the worlds of rock, pop and the avant-garde into its own self-defining statement. On its third release (and Cuneiform debut) Say So, the band focuses on the sound of surprise. It’s rock for the thinking person. The group’s lyrics are dark and infused with themes focusing on the emergence of personal demons, unwanted situations and the difficulty of conquering them. Its mercurial sound matches its subject matter. It’s a thrilling aural roller-coaster ride with arrangements designed to make listeners throw their arms up in wild abandon as they engage with them. Bent Knee is a true collective. The band operates as a democratic entity with sky-high standards and a determination to push boundaries.

Richard Pinhas & Barry Cleveland
[ft: Michael Manring & Celso Alberti]
Mu
Genre: Avant-Progressive / Art Rock / Experimental / Fourth World / Psychedelic
Format: CD / Digital
Release Date: 9/16/2016

Mu is often translated as “nothingness,” but as the response in Zen’s most famous koan, the gesture speaks to a truth deeper than rational dualistic thinking can obtain—therefore also resonating with the creative mindset accompanying the purest forms of musical improvisation. The music created by guitar iconoclast and electronic music pioneer Richard Pinhas and insistently inventive guitarist Barry Cleveland on Mu originated in just such a way, arising seemingly from “nothingness.”  Unfettered by genre conventions, the album unfurls as a confluence of overlapping musical currents informed by art rock, ambient, electronic, avant-garde jazz, and various “world” music inflections. Joined by two longtime Cleveland collaborators, electric bass innovator Michael Manring and drum master Celso Alberti.

Richard Pinhas / Tatsuya Yoshida / Masami Akita [Merzbow]
Process and Reality

Genre: Rock / Minimalism
Format: CD / Digital
Release Date: 9/16/2016

Three founding fathers of experimental music join forces to conjure an unholy serenade for a society on the verge of collapse on Process and Reality, an hourlong whirlwind of pessimistic prophecy transformed into a heady monolith of sound.

Boundary-stretching guitarist Richard Pinhas, founder of the influential French electronic-rock band Heldon, teams with two icons of the Japanese avant-garde – drummer Tatsuya Yoshida, mastermind of warped-prog legends Ruins, Koenjihyakkei and Korekyojinn, and Masami Akita, a.k.a. noise guru Merzbow – to summon a brutally honest, politically potent, sonically tumultuous reflection of the last gasps of the industrial age. Process and Reality marks the first recorded convergence of these three avant-rock giants.

Deus Ex Machina
Devoto
Genre: Rock / Progressive / Fusion
Format: CD / Digital
Release Date: 6/24/2016

Following an eight-year absence, the Italian rock/progressive group Deus Ex Machina (DEM) bursts back onto the international scene with Devoto. Blazing into contemporary focus with Devoto, DEM is poised to transcend the accomplishments of its past. Devoto retains DEM’s distinctive blend of fiery, complexly designed music, passionate bel canto vocals, virtuosic instrumental performances and analogue-heavy textures. Here as before, DEM’s music combines both the energy and beauty of early Mahavishnu Orchestra and Larks' Tongues in Aspic-era King Crimson; classic 70s hard rock influences from AC/DC, Deep Purple and, most unmistakably, Led Zeppelin; hints of RIO-tinged avant-progressive; and the unmistakable Mediterranean vibe of fellow 'Rock Progressivo Italiano' combos like PFM.

Swiss Brutal-Jazz Power Trio SCHNELLERTOLLERMEIER Announce November 2016 USA Tour

Swiss Brutal-Jazz Power Trio
SCHNELLERTOLLERMEIER
Announce
November 2016 USA Tour

Swiss power trio Schnellertollermeier (guitarist Manuel Troller, bassist Andi Schnellmann, and drummer David Meier) doesn't screw around. The group's uncompromising attitude is apparent before you even hear a note of its music -- it's right there in that deliberate tongue-twister of a name. A fresh, bold and highly energetic mix of jazz, punk, rock, sound art and free improvised music, executed with great musicianship and astounding group interplay, its music hits the bullseye.

Schnellertollermeier has performed at jazz and experimental music festivals across the European continent; this November 2016 USA -X- Tour marks its first appearance in the US after having released X, their internationally acclaimed 3rd album, on the American label Cuneiform Records.

"Schnellertollermeier...marries brutality to avant-garde rock and jazz. A classic power trio from Switzerland, the band plays with punk fury and a dazzling technical dexterity to create booming, bone-rattling music that stalks, confronts, and astonishes.”

Brutal jazz /minimalist rock power trio Schnellertollermeier don’t screw around. Their uncompromising attitude is even apparent before you hear a note of their music -- it's right there in that deliberate tongue-twister of a name. On X, their Cuneiform Records debut, Schnellertollermeier boldly emerge from their key position in Switzerland’s underground rock scene with sharpened sonic knives, dialed up intensity, and laser-edged tunes to carve out a spot for themselves on the international stage. X is the young trio’s third recording, and in it they don't merely redefine their sound, they reinvent it. The tunes the band came up with -- after cloistering themselves away in a house in the Swiss mountains that served as their musical mad-scientist's laboratory -- recast the traditional function of the guitar-bass-drums lineup, expanding it into new territory and combining the brute force of Schnellertollermeier's 2008 debut with the conceptualism of their second album for something that's ultimately beyond the scope of either one. The Alps had given the trio space to let their imaginations soar. Against the sublime mountain backdrop, they perfected stark, powerful compositions and expanded their ideas. While later recording, they continued their experiments, playing with sound, and even recording reflections on glass to enhance their music’s natural brilliance.

The resultant album, X, is a masterful work of instrumental musical intensity. The songs, whether long or short, crushing or ambient, have absolutely no padding on them. The challenging, sometimes downright confrontational mix of jazz, minimalism, experimental rock, noise, punk, free improv, modern composition, avant-garde and electronic influences erupting throughout X is what this genre-blind trio of 30-year-old musicians effortlessly, even unconsciously, does, obeying only internal logic. Refreshing, highly-energized and original, their music can perhaps be compared with other beyond-genre bands, a crossing of Zs, Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog and Ben Frost.

The album is named for the 20-minute title suite that occupies its first half, though "occupies" is probably too passive a term for a piece that alternately hammers you into submission and plays a haunting hide-and-seek game with your nervous system via its sturm und drang dynamics and breathtaking stop-start structures. “X,” the record's centrepiece, is a suite composed of four parts, and named after the letter that “stands for these four parts”.  On “X,” the trio aimed to become more like a single mighty instrument than three distinct players. It's an idea that can be traced at least as far back as Ornette Coleman's concept of "harmolodic" music, where the whole band is playing the melody, harmony, and rhythm together instead of individual instruments staking out exclusive territory. But when it comes into play via the piledriver rhythms and crushing riffs of this album's namesake cut, it makes for a strikingly visceral impact – you don't so much listen to the music as feel it…in your gut.

The rest of the record hits just as hard, even when the band drops the dynamics down a touch. Just as it was originally envisioned, X is truly the sound of Schneller, Troller, and Meier disappearing into the bigger, bolder entity that is Schnellertollermeier, from the almost tribal beats of "Backyard Lipstick" to the careful balance between control and chaos played out in "Riot," which offers an idea of what it might feel like to live inside a cuckoo clock; from the dark ambience of "Sing for Me" to the thrash-progfrenzy of "Massacre Du Printemps" and the cinematic sprawl of the expansive-but-urgent minimal/post-rock closing cut, challengingly titled "///\\\///."

Listening to the album, one doesn’t focus on any single performer; in fact, the band felt that here it had finally achieved its goal to “sound like one compact organism, with every element having its own importance and clear function.” Schnellertollermeier’s very name celebrates the fact that it is a single-minded entity, a trio of musicians melding their minds and functioning as a single organism. The band’s name is a creative -- as opposed to literal -- combination of the 3 members' surnames. Guitarist Manuel Troller, bassist Andi Schnellmann, and drummer David Meier, are all eclectic souls versed in the realms of rock, jazz, classical, and more. Schnellmann earned a degree from the Jazz School of Lucerne and toured with the international Swiss Pop Star Sophie Hunger; so did Troller, who studied with British art-rock guitar legend Fred Frith and has collaborated with for example famed U.S. jazz drummer/composer Gerry Hemingway and internationally acclaimed jazz-funk conceptualists Nik Bartsch's Ronin Rhythm Clan; Meier also works with improv outfit Things to Sounds, plays in Christoph Gallio’s Day & Taxi and in the international band Trio Riot among others.

While two of the bandmembers had known each other since High School, Schnellertollermeier formed in 2006, when their paths again crossed at the School of Music in Lucerne. They made their debut recording in 2008, the album Holz, whose influences ranged from Tim Berne to John Abercrombie to Mr. Bungle and more. Blending fiercely heavy rock, left-field jazz, and daring free improv in a dizzying sonic swirl, Holz struck a sonic nerve in Switzerland and generated significant buzz. The album and frequent live shows helped transform Schnellertollermeier into underground sensations. The trio soon started working on new material, seeking a more personal sound, both compositionally and improvisationally. The follow-up album, Zorn einen ehmer üttert stem!! (Veto Records), came out in 2010. It simultaneously expanded and refined the band's musical vocabulary, as new elements from modern classical music, minimal and experimental music, and noise found their way into Schnellertollermeier’s playing and composing. Enthusiastically received by critics and the public alike, Zorn… led to Schnellertollermeier playing in prized clubs in their homeland, and in numerous festival performances abroad, from Austria to Russia.

On X, Schnellertollermeier transformed their sound again into something new, and larger; former 'traditional jazz' elements have been subsumed by the brute energy from rock and experimental music, as well as improvisational soundscapes, minimal music and, finally, jazz in the modern, broad, experimental sense. After writing their compositions in the Alps, and before recording, the group test the material on the road, touring extensively in Switzerland, Russia and Austria.

Finally, they painstakingly recorded it, going beyond any procedures they’d previously done on their own or others’ recordings. In their words:

“For the recording, we also did a lot of research, planned the room/studio/miking-situation really precisely. We used many more microphones than we ever did before (also more than in other bands’ recordings) – For example, the drums and its room were recorded with 14 microphones, also recording the reflections on glass to get a lot of natural brilliance. As you would imagine, the mixing process was exciting, but also sometimes a b****“!”

With the intensity ratcheted up even further than before, the compositional approach more all-encompassing than on previous albums, and the overall sonic heft of the band reaching what can only be considered maximum capacity (at least for normal human beings), X stands as Schnellertollermeier's most resonant recording to date. Following X’s worldwide release, Schnellertollermeier will be touring extensively in Switzerland and at jazz, rock and experimental music festivals abroad.

"This young Swiss trio...helps redefine the conventional guitar-led power trio format and succeeds on many fronts. It's an adrenalized outfit that abides by a thunderous posture, amalgamating progressive rock, metal, minimalism and Sci-Fi style free improvisation amid devastating bass and drums interactions. At times, the band's high-volume force-field could make Black Sabbath sound like a hotel lounge act."
- All About Jazz

Together [Schnellertollermeier] operate as one compact organism. This organism is savage and dangerous, but can be caressing and dreamy when it wants…. They...explore the unusual… It’s safe to say there’s nothing quite like Schnellertollermeier’s music out there ... With X, we get the trio at its finest form, twisting, stabbing and swirling, with full, merciless power. Elements of rock, jazz, metal, noise, industrial and ambient...woven and merged in a genre-defying way. The six compositions simply burst with electrifying energy and edgy experimentalism, providing a skull-shattering, mind-boggling and body-stimulating experience. X is ambitious and wonderfully bizarre and hectic."

Read SUBREWIND's interview with Richard Pinhas:
"The Way Forward: An Interview With Electronic Music Pioneer Richard Pinhas"

Three founding fathers of experimental music join forces to conjure a serenade for a society on the verge of collapse on Process and Reality, an hourlong whirlwind of pessimistic prophecy transformed into a heady monolith of sound. Boundary-stretching guitarist Richard Pinhas, founder of the influential French electronic-rock band Heldon, teams with two icons of the Japanese avant-garde – drummer Tatsuya Yoshida, mastermind of warped-prog legends Ruins, and Masami Akita, a.k.a. noise guru Merzbow – to summon a brutally honest, politically potent, sonically tumultuous reflection of the last gasps of the industrial age.

Process and Reality, released on Cuneiform Records, marks the first recorded convergence of these three avant-rock giants, though Pinhas has recorded with both Yoshida and Merzbow in the past and all three have toured extensively together in Japan (often joined by the equally iconic guitarist Keiji Haino). The album, recorded in Tokyo during a recent high-profile tour, captures the fevered intensity and violently textured depth of the trio’s collaborative improvisations.

Simultaneous with his studies on the guitar, Pinhas earned a PhD in philosophy from the Sorbonne, where he studied with the late French philosopher Gilles Deleuze, and his aggressive, combustible music has always been honed to a keen edge by its philosophical bent. Process and Reality takes its name from an influential 1929 book by English mathematician and philosopher Alfred North Whitehead, which posits reality as a continual process of becoming.

That’s an apt summation of the music made by Pinhas, Yoshida and Akita, which seethes and roils in a constant state of both turbulent flux and visceral realization. The guitarist says of his collaborators, “They explore 100% of their possibility. We have the same kind of spirit.”

That spirit seems to blanch in the face of the modern age. Though he doesn’t regard Process and Reality as the still-to-come third part of his “Devolution Trilogy,” which began with 2014’s Desolation Row and continued with 2014’s Welcome… In the Void, a duo collaboration with Yoshida, Pinhas obviously feels that the music created on the new recording expresses a similarly foreboding worldview. The album arrives in the shadow of a series of tragic terrorist attacks in the guitarist’s native France, in the midst of an unprecedentedly ugly American presidential election, and in the aftermath of the Brexit vote that sent shockwaves across Europe, with no end in sight to the crisis in the Middle East and ensuing refugee crisis. The global forecast on the album’s 2016 release is riddled with dark clouds, as an overwhelming mood of political turmoil roils the global consciousness.

While many of those world events were still in the future or in a more nascent stage when Process and Reality was recorded, they fulfill Pinhas’ bleak vision of our fates. In what he calls “the Industrial Age Final Times,” the economically distressed Detroit is the “city of the future” and civilization will be transitioning from wars over oil and gas to battles for water, the very stuff of life itself. In his darkly clouded crystal ball, ecological disaster, global terrorism, a sweeping wave of Fascism in Europe and increasing technological reliance all forebode decades of “very bad things happening.”

While those subjects weren’t expressly discussed during the making of the album, Pinhas says they can’t help but have made an impact on it. “A musician is doing what he’s doing when he’s doing it,” he explains. “All your thoughts, everything you do is the result of the historical time where you’re living. The mood is changing and we’re heading toward something very chaotic. The music I’ve been doing over the last several years is trying to be a reflection of this chaos and void that we’re coming to.”

If all of this sounds more like the dystopian vision of a science fiction writer rather than that of a ground-breaking experimental musician, that’s no accident. Pinhas has enjoyed intellectual friendships with a number of science fiction writers tracing back decades, including Michael Moorcock, Philip K. Dick, Norman Spinrad and the late Maurice Dantec, with whom Pinhas formed the project Schizotrope. He sees his own fatalistic premonitions as akin to their writings.

“Normally musicians and writers have a premonition of reality before it happens,” Pinhas explains. “That’s why I’m very involved with science fiction writers. They have an insight or vision of what will become our near future. If you read the books of very good science fiction writers in the ‘70s, they describe the society where we’re living now.”

The outlook embodied by the music on Process and Reality is stunningly pictured in cover art worthy of a cyberpunk novel, rendering an oil tanker as a surrogate for the decaying post-industrial future. It was created by Patrick Jelin, the gifted French designer also responsible for the covers for classic Heldon albums Interface (1977) and Stand By (1979), as well as Pinhas’1979 solo effort Iceland.

Despite the dark context, the very process that the title Process and Reality hints at is one of transforming chaotic reality into a gorgeous, densely layered and richly textured monolith of beauty, one radiant with the breathtaking colors of a purple-tinged sky preceding a storm.  The music swells into being on the first track, “TVJ 00 (Intro)” – not much for elaborate titles, Pinhas assigns his pieces a letter/number combo a la the Köchel numbers associated with Mozart’s compositions – as Pinhas and Akita create a dizzying maelstrom of guitar and electronics noise over Yoshida’s pummeling drum assault, a torrent of layered noise that won’t seem unfamiliar to Merzbow aficionados.

The centerpiece of the album is the 35+ minute second track, “TVJ 33 (Core track),” on which Yoshida establishes a lurching groove under the gradually swelling colors that bloom from Pinhas’ lush guitar blooms and Akita’s insistently buzzing electronics. The sound builds to a glimmering intensity, both punishing and blissful, which the trio maintains for nearly 20 minutes. Finally the barrage disperses, leaving behind rippling echoes of metallic tones occasionally disrupted by blasts of digital noise, unexpectedly revealing the bandmates’ Fripp and Eno influences. The respite doesn’t last long, however, as a harsh metal-on-metal industrial soundscape overwhelms the calm. “TVJ 66 (Non-Sens)” follows with crushing waves of sound, an aural whirlwind stirred by Merzbow’s piercing gales. The album concludes with the relatively serene “TVJ 77 (Quiet Final),” a stop-start mind-bender that delves into space-rock psychedelics.

Pinhas also sees the album as a celebration of his cherished friendship with these Japanese artists, with whom he’s convened on regular tours of Japan since 2007. “Japan is the best scene in the world,” he asserts, and while he foresees a radical change in his sound approaching in 2017, he continues that, “Always I will work with my forever friends.” Amidst the darkening global politics, Pinhas finds solace in the friendship and communion he shares with Yoshida and Akita, artists with whom he shares a deep and crucial bond if not a common language. If the music on Process and Reality is a response to a volatile age, it stems from deeply-felt relationships that offer inspirational shelter from that gathering storm.

Process and Reality arrives well into Richard Pinhas’ fifth decade as a recording artist and constant innovator. Recognized as one of France's major experimental musicians and a pivotal figure in the international development of electronic rock music, Pinhas' stature in France is analogous to Tangerine Dream's in Germany: the father figure of an entire musical movement. Inspired by a wide range of music from classic ‘60s rock to ‘70s jazz fusion and progressive rock, Pinhas recorded seven albums with Heldon between 1974 and 1979 before disbanding the project to focus on his work with a wide range of collaborators. Throughout his long career he’s constantly evolved, remaining on the bleeding edge of multiple genres, while younger generations continue to catch up and rediscover his work, whether sampling it in new music or simply revealing its profound influence. He’s reissued his early work on Cuneiform as well as releasing a steady stream of new music, while also penning books on philosophy and his mentor, Deleuze.

His collaborators on the album are two of the most revered and influential musicians of the Japanese experimental music scene. Since 1985, Tatsuya Yoshida has led the avant-prog group Ruins, a power duo (usually) with its own invented language and an equally singular sound. Yoshida has also led several other groups, including Zubi Zuva, Koenji Hyakkei and Korekyojinn, and released a number of solo projects. He spent time as the drummer of the influential prog group YBO2 alongside guitarist KK Null, whom Yoshida currently joins in the latest incarnation of the longrunning noise-rock band Zeni Geva. Yoshida has worked with many of the most prominent figures in the avant-garde, including Fred Frith, John Zorn, Derek Bailey, Bill Laswell, Yoshihide Otomo, Acid Mothers Temple and countless others. (magaibutsu.com)

Recording as Merzbow, the prolific Masami Akita has released more than 400 recordings of ear-shattering noise music, becoming one of the foremost icons of the music. He’s previously released three duo albums with Pinhas on Cuneiform: Keio Line, Rhizome, and Paris 2008. Merzbow’s work draws inspiration from a number of divergent streams, including early electronic music, free jazz and fusion, heavy metal and prog, to extra-musical sources including Dada, fetish and BDSM culture, visual arts, Butoh dance and surrealism. In recent decades he’s adhered to a vegan and straight edge lifestyle and been strongly committed to the causes of animal rights and environmentalism. (merzbow.net)
